The Daily Mountain Eagle would like to commend the first responders who arrived at the scene of Friday's bomb threat at Walker Baptist Medical Center.

With personnel from the Jasper Police Department, Jasper Fire Department, Walker County Sheriff's Office, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Walker County Emergency Management Agency, Regional Paramedical Services, Sumiton Police Department, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, the Walker County Commission and the Jasper City Council, along with hospital staff, patients and visitors, the scene could have become chaotic very easily. A power struggle at the scene could have turned a dangerous situation into a much worse one, but all the representatives from various agencies put the safety of the patients and employees first and worked together for the good of the community.

With so much bad news in the headlines, that was a refreshing sight.

Also to be commended are the various police and volunteer fire departments across the county who spent much of the day securing and inspecting bridges along Highway 69, which were also threatened Friday morning.

We are proud of the first responders and hope these departments, as well as others in the county, are able to continue to work together for the betterment of the communities they serve and the residents.

We also hope that the person responsible for endangering the lives of patients at WBMC is caught and brought to justice.
