Ollen Daniel “Danny” Spears Jr., born in Inman, Va., but a resident of Union Chapel, ended his 64 year earthly journey to go home to his Lord on March 29, 2013. His final moments spent at home where he wanted to be.

Whether he was known as “Danny” or “Foots”, he was known as a God fearing man who loved his Lord, his family and his country in that order. He still had an abundance left to share with everyone he came in contact with, especially his beloved pet Milo.

He was a proud Veteran who willingly served his country in the Vietnam War from 1968 till 1970 and was rarely seen without his Veteran cap.

After serving his country he returned to Jasper, to begin working in the coal mines. His career stretched from 1971 to 1996 and he was a proud member of the United Mine Workers Association. Over the course of twenty-five years, he made countless friends of his co-workers in Maxine Mine, Gorgas Mine and Chetopia Mine.

Danny was greeted in Heaven by his earthly father, Ollen Daniel Spears Sr.; his mother, Thelma Spears Gravlee; step father, Gray Gravlee; and his sister, Jeanette Gravlee Wolfe.

Those left to cherish his life include his wife, Wanda Upton Spears; sister, Linda Spears Kimbrell and her husband, Joe; brothers, Roger Spears and his wife, Tricia, Glendon Gravlee and Ronnie Gravlee and his wife, Veronica; two children, Lee Spears and Lynn Spears Emerson; special son, Terrell Lee Spears; and a host of extended family members who loved him far too great to list.

Visitation with the family will be today, April 2, 2013, at Collins-Burke Funeral Home from 6 until 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Collins-Burke Funeral Home. Bro. Fred lackey will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Denny Kimbrell, Terry Spears, Ryan Gravlee, Joshua Upton, Casey Tidwell and Wayne Williams.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, you are encouraged to make donations to The American Cancer Society to honor Danny’s memory.

A special thank you to Ridgeview Rehabilitation Center and Comfort Care Hospice.
