Nora Sargent "Sarge" McGuirk, 100, of Fultondale, went home to be with the Lord on July 2, 2013.

McGuirk was preceded in death by her husband, John C., to whom she was married for 69 years; and daughter, Johnnie Lou McGuirk. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Ed and Beulah Sargent; brothers, Carl Sargent, Pete Sargent and Frank Sargent (Eula, deceased); and sister, Ola Mae Reeves (Joe, deceased).

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Susie Clements (Ralph, deceased), John E. McGuirk (Judy), William A McGuirk and Diane Hill (Norman, deceased); grandchildren, Leigh Ann Roe (Bill), Debbie Horton (Kevin), Jay McGuirk (Jennifer), Jill Rouse (Rusty), Kelley Hill; great grandchildren, Dalton, Landon and Laney Roe, Taylor, Mary Kate, and Hannah Horton, Riley, Nate, and Barrett McGuirk, Cade and Marlee Cate Rouse; sister, Betty Sargent; sister-in-law, Willie Faye Sargent; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was born June 15, 1913, in Dora and graduated from Dora High School. She started her career in nursing at Carraway Methodist Hospital, where she worked under Dr. Ben Carraway. McGuirk was past president of the PTA at North Birmingham Elementary School, Sayre Junior High School, Lewisburg Junior High School and Gardendale High School, Homemaker Club, Fultondale Garden Club, North End Council and a member of Eastern Star Ruth Chapter. She was a member of Fultondale First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years and served on various committees.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday July 6, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Walker Chapel Funeral Home with Visitation from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Walker Chapel Memorial Gardens. The family wishes to extend special thanks to McGuirk's caregivers and to Hope Hospice and Dr. Doug Alford.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be given in McGuirk's honor to Fultondale First Baptist Church.
