Visitation will be held Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home in Jasper. Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at 7 p.m. in the Kilgore-Green Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Tri-Cities Memorial Garden in Florence. Mark G. Sullivan will officiate. Kilgore-Green Funeral Home will direct.
Banks was born on Feb. 16, 1942, in Gorgas, Ala., to James Odell Banks and Juanita Short Banks. He graduated from Oakman High School in 1960. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history and physical education from Florence State College (UNA) and his master’s degree in education and administration from the University of Montevallo.
He taught and coached at Cordova High School, Oakman High School and Curry High School, and served as assistant principal at Farmstead Jr. High School. He retired as principal from T.W. Martin High School in 1996.
Through his years as an educator and sportsman, Mike influenced many to excel and be the best they could be at whatever they chose to do. Mike loved the outdoors and he was an accomplished fisherman, bowhunter and overall sportsman who also loved to garden, and in his later years learned to enjoy the art and practice of flint-knapping (making arrow heads).
Mike was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and a friend to many he touched.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Mary Frances Banks; his loving daughter, Mary Mike Sullivan (Mark) of Tuscaloosa; granddaughters, Lindsey, Holly and Maggie Sullivan, also of Tuscaloosa; brothers, Jimmy Banks (Virgie) of Birmingham, Larry Banks (Betty) of Oakman and Tim Banks (Jane) of Rome, Ga.; nieces and nephews, Karen Shepherd (Ken), Terry Banks (Jan), Amy Fader (Robert), Delia Parker (Craig) and Logan Banks: and great-nieces and nephews Paige Fader, Ava Parker, Judson Parker, Cheyenne Shepherd, Hunter Shepherd, Taylor Banks, Ellie Banks and Michael Banks.
