The cancellation of the project also means the city will have to cancel the planned expansion of the city’s sewer system down Hull Road.
The funding for that expansion was coming from a grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. That grant was largely based on the estimated 30 jobs the facility would have brought to the area.
Ellis said if the Northwest Alabama Mental Health, which owns the property, decides to build a facility there in the future or another business locates there, the sewer expansion would be able to go forward.
In other business:
•The council heard from Fire Chief David Waid about the department’s new heart monitor. The monitor can be used to expedite treatment for patients having heart attacks.
The monitor sends test results ahead to the cardiologist and allows patients to go straight to the cath lab, rather than going through the emergency room.
•The council approved purchasing another property adjacent to the site for the proposed new fire station on Bryan Road.
