GUIN — The defending Class 1A state champion rebounded from its first loss of the season in a big way on Friday, thumping the Meek Tigers 83-6 in their first-round playoff game.

Marion County, which lost to Red Bay in the regular-season finale last week, scored at will on the Tigers, who were making their first playoff appearance since 2003.

Marion County (10-1) piled up 572 yards (444 rushing, 128 passing) in the game while Meek tallied 141 yards.

Justin Sanderson led the Marion County onslaught, rushing for 121 yards and three touchdowns on seven carries. Ready Swanigan had 106 yards and two scores on three carries while DeShawn Riebseschl had 78 yards and a score on three carries. All three players didn’t hit the field in the second half.

Quarterback Shawn Wallace was 4 of 4 throwing the ball for 128 and two touchdowns. He added an 18-yard run.

The Raiders led 35-0 after the opening quarter. Marion County needed just 12 plays to score their first five touchdowns. The Raiders led 62-0 at the half. Marion County added one touchdown in the third quarter for a 69-0 lead. Meek got on the scoreboard in fourth quarter when quarterback Seth Hayes hit Dexter Woodard for a 34-yard touchdown strike.

Marion County plays at R.A. Hubbard (7-4) next week.
