Sgt. Ralph Williams, an investigator with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, said Luke Varcato, 41, of Pineywoods was reportedly shot and killed Monday around 8 p.m. following an altercation with Jeffrey Deskins, 50, of Old Pineywoods Road in Jasper.
“Deskins reportedly returned home Monday evening to find that his home had been burglarized. He contacted the sheriff’s office and filed an incident report, in which he listed Varcato as the suspect in the burglary,” Williams said. “Approximately one hour later, Deskins contacted the sheriff’s office again and stated Varcato had came out of the woods armed with a machete, and he (Deskins) had shot him (Varcato) with a pistol.”
Williams said when sheriff’s patrol deputies arrived on the scene the second time, Varcato was found dead on the ground from an apparent gunshot wound.
“They reportedly also found Varcato with two machete type objects, a knife, a handgun in a shoulder holster and a screw driver on his person,” Williams said. “He was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries.”
Williams said the Walker County District Attorney’s Office has been contacted regarding the shooting, and the Alabama Department of Forensic Science was conducting an autopsy.
“Deskins maintains he shot Varcato in self-defense, but we are continuing to investigate this matter,” Williams said. “Once we have completed our investigation, we will turn everything over to the district attorney for further consideration.”
Williams said no arrest has been made and no charges have been filed in the case at this point.
