At the recent Walker Board of Realtors Christmas party at Musgrove Country Club, the group gave more than $12,000 to area charities.
Brian Alexander, the current president of the Walker Board of Realtors, said those donations were a few of the many the group has given throughout the year.
“During my two years as president, I’ve wanted to do things that helped our community,” he said. “I think that is exactly what we have done.”
Area charities who received money at the Christmas party included Hope Clinic ($2,000), Backyard Blessings ($2,000), Angel Tree ($2,000), Daily Mountain Eagle Shoe Fund ($2,000), Haven for Hope ($2,000), Winfield Community Christmas ($1,000), Hamilton Christmas for Kids ($1,000) and Alabama Power Toys in Haleyville ($500).
Alexander said each agent also brought canned goods and an unwrapped toy for the Salvation Army.
In 2012, total real estate sales in Walker County were $103,281,649, which is up by more than $26 million from 2011.
The average home sale in 2012 was up by more than $36,000 to $170,120.
Alexander said 45 area agents sold at least $1 million worth of property, with the leading salesman for 2012 being Justin Dyar of White Pepper Real Estate with more than $50 million in sales.
Keith Davis, the upcoming president for the Walker Board of Realtors, said the improvements in the housing markets are a good sign of things to come. He hopes area agents will continue to give and volunteer.
“I’m starting an initiative that I’m calling ‘Giving Back, Helping Our Community’ that I hope will help us to give even more over the next couple of years,” he said.
“We’ve done a lot, but I think we can take that up a notch. We’ve been blessed in real estate and we need to continue to pay that forward.”
