The Trike-A-Thon is a week-long event where students have fun while being exposed to good bicycle safety habits. It culminates on Friday, Nov. 8, with the course event, where the participants demonstrate the safety habits they have learned while riding for a very special cause — raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Started in the 2004-05 school year, the Trike-A-Thon has helped the school raise $30,000 for St. Jude, with contributions growing in numbers each year. DFBK Director Casie Bridges stated that the annual event carries the additional benefit of allowing students to feel the joy of helping others while having fun and learning important safety rules.
“We felt that it was a great opportunity to teach our children other kids who are sick and not as well as they are,” Bridges said. “It’s their chance, as well as the community’s to help the kids at St. Jude and feel proud that they have done so. And our children look forward to it. They see videos of children in the hospital — kids just like them — whose lives are different because of the illnesses they have. They have the chance to see what those childrens’ lives are like when they’re healthy, which makes our kids even more excited.”
The community’s support has been integral throughout the years that the Trike-A-Thon has been held — earning commendation from representatives of St Jude.
“We get calls every year from St. Jude wondering how we are able to raise the funds with such a small student population. To them, the type of money we raise is unfathomable, but we always reply that it is due to our community support, which has been overwhelming.”
Beth McLeroy, whose students have participated in the event since its inception, said seeing the children of DFBK riding to help others brings great joy to everyone involved.
“Through the videos, they actually see what the money that they raise goes for — helping kids their age get better,” McLeroy said. “Riding the tricycles around is a little extra fun for them, but actually seeing the hospital and other kids that they are helping is a concrete example for them.”
