Joseph Edward, better known as “Joe Ed” Smothers, 80, of Eldridge, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at his residence.

Smothers was born on Feb. 1, 1933, in the Bazemore community in Fayette County, a son of Harvey Edward Smothers and Ailene Walker Smothers. He worked as a carpenter with North Alabama Lumber Co. and Miller & Baughn; previously worked in the coal mines; avid fan of Auburn football and Atlanta Braves baseball; enjoyed fishing years ago; and was a faithful member of Fern Springs Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Norris Smothers, who died July 28, 2011; and two sisters, Virginia McCluskey and Mary Smothers.

Survivors include his stepson, Ronald Joe Tucker and his wife, Gail, of Eldridge; one granddaughter, Mary Evelyn Tucker of Eldridge; one brother, Lyndon, better known as “Dagwood” Smothers and his wife, Doris, of Eldridge; two sisters, Barbara Cunningham and her husband, Johnny, of Muscle Shoals and Vereda Burris and her husband, Jack, of Birmingham; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held today, Nov. 15, 2013, at 2 p.m. from the Fern Springs Baptist Church with burial in the adjoining cemetery. C.R. Hood, Ken Norris and Joe Daniels will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church. Miles Funeral Home of Winfield directing the service.
