CARBON HILL — The Carbon Hill Bulldogs were on a short leash Friday night at GW Keith Stadium, as they fell short to the Jemison Panthers by a score of 39-12.

The Panthers drew first blood, scoring on the opening drive after the Bulldogs deferred the first possession. Jemison's BJ Kornegey scored on a short run into the Bulldog end zone. A failed extra-point attempt left a 6-0 score with 9:14 remaining in the opening quarter.

Carbon Hill answered back with a long drive down the field, with freshman Hunter NeSmith connecting several times with Chandler Gann and Stevie Simmerly as they marched to the Jemison 1-yard line. A goal-line stand against the Bulldogs forced a turnover on downs. The Panthers capitalized on the turnover, as QB Kevin Nunn led Jemison down the field to connect with BJ Kornegey to bring the Panther lead to 13-0 at the end of the first half.

The Bulldogs returned to action early in the second half, with NeSmith finding Gann on a 40-yard pass, followed by short runs by Jacob Mitchell and Stevie Simmerly . A Panther penalty brought the Bulldogs to a first down on the 13-yard line. Simmerly ran 12 yards combined on two plays, putting Mitchell in position to make a one-yard dash to get the Bulldogs' first score of the evening with 6:40 left in the third quarter.

The score of 13-6 held only until the next play, with Jemison's Randy Satterfield returning a kick 65 yards for a touchdown, bringing the score to 20-6 in Jemison's favor.

Two false-start penalties and a short gain slowed the momentum for the Bulldogs, as they were forced to punt to the Panthers after three plays.

The Panthers utilized their ground attack effectively, driving 40 yards before Carbon Hill's Chandler Gann intercepted a promised Panther touchdown, bringing the ball back to midfield. Two unsuccessful runs and a sack led Carbon Hill to punt to the Panthers again.

Jemison took possession and immediately scored, bringing the score to 26-6 at the start of the final quarter.

After a series of short runs, Hunter NeSmith connected with Stevie Simmerly on a pass that would bring the Bulldogs to set up a first down on the 30 yard-line. Four incomplete passes forced another turnover, to which the Panthers took possession and immediately brought the score to 33-6 with 9:21 left in the game.

Another series of incomplete passes by the Bulldogs led to yet another turnover, with the Panthers again successful for six points, bringing the score to 39-6 with 6:30 to play.

The Bulldogs responded with a series of short runs on the next possession, resulting in Derrick Simmerly scoring for Carbon Hill. A failed extra-point attempt brought the final score to 39-12, with the Jemison Panthers victorious over the Carbon Hill Bulldogs.

Next Friday night, the Bulldogs will host Oak Grove in Carbon Hill.
