A Monday morning shooting left one Jasper resident dead and police looking for the person who shot him.

Sherman N. Willis, 67, of Jasper, was shot at his home on Cherokee Road in Jasper early Monday morning, according to Walker County Coroner J.C. Poe. Willis was pronounced dead by emergency room doctors at Walker Baptist Medical Center at approximately 9:50 a.m.

Jasper Police Lt. Paul Thompson said the department was looking into leads and “people of interest” in the case, but he couldn’t comment further on the ongoing investigation. He said the call to police came in at about 9:30 a.m.

Poe said the victim appeared to have died from the gunshot wound, but the body was being sent to Department of Forensic Science in Huntsville for autopsy to confirm cause of death and aid in the police investigation, which he said was standard procedure in a fatal shooting incident.

Anyone with information in the case should contact Thompson or Jasper police at 205-221-2121.
