A domestic incident that took place Sunday evening in Walker County resulted in the stabbing of one person and the arrest of another.

Sgt. Ralph Williams, an investigator with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, said Randy Joe Hendon Jr., 36, of 8847 Holly Grove Road in Jasper, has been charged with felony first-degree assault in connection with the stabbing of Joseph Brandon Fortenberry of Jasper.

“It is our understanding that Mr. Hendon was in a domestic dispute with his live-in girlfriend at their residence when her son, Mr. Fortenberry, responded to the scene to defend his mother,” Williams said. “At some point a physical altercation reportedly then took place between the two men.”

Williams said Hendon allegedly stabbed Fortenberry several times during the altercation.

Fortenberry was airlifted to UAB Medical Center in Birmingham where he is listed in stable condition, Williams said.

“After speaking with District Attorney Bill Adair, we charged Mr. Hendon with the felony assault charge and placed him in the Walker County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond,” Williams said. “From what I understand, he is currently on federal probation.”

Walker County Sheriff John Mark Tirey said any case involving domestic violence is always a regrettable situation.

“This situation involved a dispute between family members, which ended in some pretty serious injuries,” Tirey said. “The next action taken in this matter will be up to the courts or a grand jury.”
