Funeral services for James Carlos Goodwin, 86, of Cullman, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, in the Moss-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Cullman. Burial will follow at Cullman City Cemetery with Dr. Edwin Hayes officiating.

Goodwin was born on Jan. 8, 1928, in Jasper to the late Carl and Fannie Sides Goodwin, he passed away on his birthday at his residence. He attended Cullman High School and St. Bernard’s College. He was married on Nov. 4, 1950 to Majorie “Marge” Phillips and was married for 63 years. James was a lifetime member of the Cullman Lions Club, hold various positions and receiving numerous awards. A few of his positions were club president, district governor and on the board of director for Alabama Sight. James was a member of the Trimble Masonic Lodge for 57 years. He was active in church, serving as deacon, treasure and Sunday school teacher and Royal Ambassador director. James also served his country in the U.S. Air Force, because of this love, he was employed with NASA and Lockheed over 40 years, and traveled extensively in his work on the space shuttle. Being and avid sports fan, he coached numerous city of Cullman youth teams in baseball, and helped organized and coached Royal Ambassador basketball teams. James was a supporter of the University of Alabama and enjoyed traveling to many games to support the team. Goodwin enjoyed woodworking, antiquing, raising cattle, all with his extraordinary work ethic and a deep love for his family.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Marjorie Phillips Goodwin; two sons, Eddie (Melanie) Goodwin of Panama City, Fla., and Mark (Stacey) Goodwin of Jasper.

The family will be receiving friends for visitation Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, from 1 until 3 p.m. at Moss-Service Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, First Baptist Church of Cullman or the Cullman Lions Club.
