Girl Scouts launch direct sales this cookie season

Girl Scouts won’t be coming door-to-door with cookie order forms anymore. Instead, they’ll have the cookies themselves in hand.

The Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama recently announced that all councils within its 36-county jurisdiction will distribute cookies through direct sales instead of taking pre-orders this year.

“Having cookies on hand gives people more opportunities to get the cookies they love. Since this financial literacy program teaches business skills, girls are able to learn about customer satisfaction since there is no wait time,” said Hilary Perry, director of communications and advocacy.

Scouts received their cookies in mid-January. Booth sales began Friday at some local stores and supermarkets.

There have been no changes in the cookies this year. Varieties offered include Thin Mints, Samoas, Trefoils, Tagalongs, Do-si-dos, Dulce de Leche, Thank U Berry Munch and Savannah Smiles, which was released last year in honor of Girl Scouts 100th anniversary.

The price per box is $3.50.

Members of GSNCA sold more than 1.4 million boxes of cookies in 2012.

The Girl Scout Cookie program began in 1917.
