Geraldine “Gerry” C. Blackwell, 82, of Jasper, formerly of Chelsea, Mich., died on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at her home in Jasper. She was born on June 26, 1930, in Nauvoo, the daughter of Clarence and Nellie Gilbreath Cheatham. Her siblings were Clara Nell (Ray Henson), Imogene (Owen Glass), Carl (Faynell), Charles (Maud), Ramona (Clifford Cain), Sylvia “Faye” (Ferrell Keeton) and Dwight (Dorothy).

She was raised in the depression and post-depression era which shaped her strong character and work ethic. Gerry was introduced to her future husband, Andy Richard Blackwell, when, at the urging of his brother (R. Scott) and sister-in-law (Doris Hubbert Blackwell), Andy introduced himself to Gerry in the backyard as she hung clothes on the line. They were married on Dec. 23, 1948, in Fulton, Miss., and went with Doris and Scott to Chelsea, Mich., in search of employment.

Gerry lived in Chelsea, Mich., most of her adult life. She worked for University Microfilm as a supervisor for many years as she raised her children, Sherry Anda (Don Baibak), Larry Richard (Marie), Donna Ann (Randy Rodriquez) and Pamela Key (Rocky Browning). She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church for many years. She also volunteered for the Chelsea Community Hospital Auxiliary for many years; an activity near and dear to her heart as she helped patients and their families while hospitalized.

Gerry was the proud mother of four children; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Gerry was preceded in death by her husband, Andy; son-in-law, Randy; grandson, Matthew; great-granddaughter, McKenzie; sister, Ramona; brothers, Charles, Carl and Dwight; and special friend, William Osborne.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Collins-Burke Funeral Home in Jasper. A second memorial service will be held at Cole’s Funeral Chapel in Chelsea, Mich., with burial to follow at Vermont Cemetery in Chelsea, Mich. Date and time to be announced.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chelsea First United Methodist Church.
