A family with ties to Jasper is hoping for a big turnout at a fundraising event for their daughter set for today and Saturday in the town of Warrior.

Anna Marie Grace Bryant, the 1-year-old daughter of Ricky and Jessica Bryant of Warrior, is suffering from a rare heart disease that has forced her to undergo several surgeries in her short life. More surgeries are expected in the next year.

Ricky Bryant, who is a native of Jasper and currently a police officer in Warrior, said the city has several events planned for today and Saturday in an effort to raise funds to help with medical expenses for Anna Marie’s health care.

“They are basically shutting down the town for this,” he said.

Today, the city will host a Warrior Indian Chief Grillmaster Cookoff for anyone who thinks they’re a master at grilling. “If you think you are a barbecue master, a backyard griller of a tailgater, then this competition is for you,” Bryant said.

There’s a $50 entry fee, which includes a rack of ribs and chicken thighs or legs for all your grilling needs. First-place trophies will be given out for the best ribs, best chicken and the best sauce. One winner will be named grand champion grillmaster. The competition will be held at the Warrior ball fields.

You can register by calling 205-590-2279 or 205-647-7002.

At 9 p.m. today, a fireworks show will be held, Bryant said.

On Saturday, the Heart of Warrior Car Show for vehicles made before 1980 will be held from 3 until 7 p.m. on Main Street in Warrior. There’s no admission charge, but donations will be accepted and will go to the Anna Marie Fund. Registration for the car show will be held from 2 until 3 p.m. at the Warrior City Hall.

First-, second- and third-place winners will be announced, plus a mayor’s choice award will be given.

The event will be held rain or shine.

To register, call Carl Burns at 205-675-7401 or Mike Mosley at 205-641-1377.

Donations may also be made to the Anna Marie Fund at Peoples Bank or Cadence Bank in Warrior.
