The Downtown Business Association is kicking off the tax-free weekend with a First Friday event around the courthouse square.

The theme of the night is “paint the town red.” The stated purpose of the event is to enhance, revitalize, protect and promote the historical heritage of downtown.

The event will include music, food, arts and crafts, a fashion show, video tournament and various other activities.

The First Friday series will be held monthly throughout the fall, according to Jenny Sayles, an AmeriCorps VISTA working in Jasper on behalf of the DBA.

“We’re looking forward to this being the kick-off and it continuing to grow. We hope it will be an opportunity to showcase different groups in the community and combining what they do in one event,” Sayles said.

Activities will begin at 5 p.m. Registration for the video game tournament will be held at the downtown location of G. May & Sons Furniture. The tournament will start at 5:30 p.m.

Flo Knight of Flo Knows Fitness and the Sassy Stompers are scheduled to perform. Pat’s Archery and Outdoors, Central Alabama Rodders Society, the Walker County Farmers Market and nonprofits will also be participating.

At 7 p.m. prizes will be awarded for a scavenger hunt that will be going on at participating businesses throughout the day. Forms will be available at the following locations: Girlie Things Boutique, The Secret Place Consignment Boutique, Young Jewelers, Bernard's Store For Men, G May & Sons Furniture, Thirty8Twenty Boutique and Gallery, Bare Bones Cargo and Wilma's Flowers.
