Elbert Grady Hendrix Sr., 90, of Jasper, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham.

Grady Hendrix was born June 17, 1923, in Fayette County, Ala. to Elbert Ellis Hendrix and Lucy Belle Parker Hendrix.

As a child growing up on a working farm, Grady had a love for the outdoors. This naturally led him into scouting where he began his career as a member of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in Winfield in 1936, which continued throughout his life.

In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army serving in Los Alamos, New Mexico, on the Manhattan Project. After serving in the Army, he enrolled at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, known now as Auburn University, and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Education in 1949. It was in Auburn where he met his wife, Mary Neal Dollar Hendrix.

Mr. Hendrix began his teaching career at Walker County High School in January of 1950 and retired in 1985. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Jasper (PCA) where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, taught Sunday School and served as a Deacon, Elder and Elder Emeritus.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Neal Dollar Hendrix; daughters, Patricia Neal Putman (Mike Putman) and Beth Hendrix Kennedy (Paul Kennedy); son, Elbert Grady Hendrix Jr. (Debbie Browning Hendrix); grandchildren, Timothy Putman, Jessica Putman, Daniel Kennedy, Elbert Grady Hendrix III, (Trey), Matthew Kennedy and Blake Hendrix; and great-granddaughter, Natalie Putman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Black Warrior Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Walker Area Community Foundation, or First Presbyterian Church of Jasper.

Visitation will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Jasper, Friday, March 28, 2014, from noon until 2 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with burial at Walker Memory Gardens. Scott Pierce will officiate. You may sign the online register at www.kilgoregreenfuneralhome.com.
