A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 3, 2013, in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro with Dr. Keith Franklin and Dr. Steve Rainey officiating. Visitation will follow the service in the Faith Center of the church.
Dr. Deason was born in Parrish on April 12, 1926, to John Powell Deason and Berniece Moore Deason. He graduated from Oakman High School at 16 and joined the U.S. Navy at 17; he served two years during World War II on LSM 460.
After beginning coursework at Jacksonville State Teachers College, he received his BS in education from the University of Alabama in 1949. He received his MA in education from the Peabody College for Teachers in 1958 and his Doctorate in Education from Columbia Teachers College (New York City) in 1959.
Dr. Deason served as principal of several high schools in Alabama and Georgia before becoming superintendent of schools in Troy, Alamance County, N.C., and he was the last superintendent of the North Wilkesboro City Schools. He concluded his service to education by serving as director of Appalachian State University’s Wilkes Area Teaching Center, supervising student teachers as they prepared to become public school teachers.
Upon retirement, he attended the local pastor school at Duke University, became a licensed pastor and served as minister to a number of small congregations in Ashe and Wilkes counties. He was a faithful teacher and preacher.
He was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro and was active with the men’s Bible class. He helped fellow Bible class members prepare breakfast for the church each fourth Sunday of the month.
He was a loyal member of the Rotary Club and transferred his membership each time he moved for over sixty years. He enjoyed working the merchandise tent at Merlefest with fellow Rotarians and was instrumental in recruiting new members. He lived his last year and a half at Rose Glen Village Retirement Community in Wilkesboro, where he enjoyed the friendship of both new and long time friends.
Dr. Deason was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Mary Huffaker Deason.
He is survived by his son, Jack Deason and his wife, Tina, of Durham, N.C.; daughter, Carol McDowell and her husband, Mike, of Elkin, N.C.; son, Mike Deason and his wife, Peggy, of Jeffersonville, Ind.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Marie Deason Smith and her husband, Harold.
