Several goverment offices in downtown Jasper will host area trick-or-treaters Wednesday.

Walker County Circuit Clerk Susan Odom said the sixth annual trick-or-treat at the Walker County Courthouse and surrounding offices will take place from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“We’ve done this every year since I took office,” Odom said. “This is a day that our offices look forward to every year. Most courthouse employees will be dressed up. We like to see who can have the best costumes.”

Odom said the event gives children a safe place to trick-or-treat and gives them the opportunity to see government offices.

“For a lot of children, this will be the first time they’ve been inside a government office,” she said. “We want to show them that we are here to help area citizens and that we are a safe place for them to come if they ever need help for any reason.”

Odom said all offices at the courthouse will participate in the trick-or-treating as well as the Walker County Probate Judge’s Office, the Walker County Sheriff’s Office and Jasper City Hall.

Jasper Mayor Sonny Posey said the annual trick-or-treat at city hall is a special event.

“It gives us a chance to meet and talk with a lot of folks that we don’t normally see,” he said. “I look forward to seeing all the kids in their costumes. I just hope everyone has a safe and fun Halloween.”

Jasper Police Chief Connie Cooner Rowe said the police department will host trick-or-treaters Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. She said the JPD Explorers program, a group of Boy Scouts who train with local police, will hand out candy while Jasper officers will give out healthy snacks, such as bags of apple slices, cheese sticks and fruit juice.

“We are trying to encourage health and wellness within our department as well as within our community,” Rowe said. “The healthy snacks were popular last year. We estimated our crowd was around 500 people for the night.”

The Jasper Fire Department will also host trick-or-treaters from 5 to 8 p.m. Firefighters expect to have a small haunted area in the firehouse and to give out lots of candy.
