Winkler, a 19-year-old Dora native, won Miss Rocket City Outstanding Teen in 2011 and was crowned Miss Walker County in 2012.
Winkler was one of 17 contests in the Miss UNA Scholarship Pageant. An elementary education major, Winkler is one of the few freshmen to wear the Miss UNA crown.
“In a school pageant, even though it’s a local preliminary to Miss Alabama, normally your upperclassmen will win,” Winkler said.
In spite of her previous success in pageants, which she has been competing in since she was 14, Winkler admits to being nervous while going through the competition.
“There were a lot of freshman competing, but I was a little intimidated because it’s not normal for a freshman to win,” Winkler said.
Contestants were judged on an interview session, an on-stage question, a talent portion, eveningwear and a lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit.
Winkler is an elementary education major. Her platform is “Heart to Heart,” an aim to increase community awareness of heart disease.
Her talent is piano. Her instructor is Jane Hudson of Jasper.
For winning Miss UNA, Winkler will receive full tuition for a year. She will also be allowed to design a custom ring from Creative Jewelers in Florence.
Her responsibilities include numerous school appearances, the first of which is scheduled for barely a week after of her win.
“You receive a lot, but you have to give a lot too,” Winkler said.
Winkler will be returning to Jasper in February to crown the next Miss Walker County.
She will also be competing in Miss Alabama in June.
