Smoking is now prohibited in public places, including the city’s parks, buildings and vehicles.
Business owners may also request that their property be designated as a smoke free environment.
“It doesn’t impose it on any private citizen. They would have to petition for us to enforce it on their property,” Mayor Drew Gilbert said.
The ordinance requires that “No Smoking” signs be prominently posted in all areas that are designated as smoke free.
The penalty for violating the ordinance is a minimum fine of $25 and court cost.
The ordinance is effective immediately.
In other action, the council:
•Agreed to become a sponsor for the Ruble Run to be held Nov. 2 at Gamble Park in Jasper.
The run is named in memory of Richard Ruble, the former construction coordinator for the Walker County Long Term Recovery Committee.
•Approved a trade of a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe that is used by the city to deliver meals to senior citizens and for traveling to conferences for a 2004 Buick Rendezvous.
No money is involved in the trade.
•Learned that a Tacky Sweater 5K will be held in the city on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 9 a.m.
Proceeds will go to the city and the Cordova Police Department Toy Drive.
Registration is now open. The fee is $25 through Nov. 22 or $30 the day of the race.
