CORDOVA — With four returning starters and a talented bench, the Cordova girls basketball team promises to be a playoff contender this season.

The Blue Devils looked like one on Tuesday in the season opener against an overmatched Oak Grove squad.

Cordova (1-0) jumped on the Tigers 27-0 after the first quarter and held Oak Grove to just two baskets in the game en route to a 85-5 victory.

Four girls scored in double figures for Cordova with Alexis Cooper leading the way with 16 points. Randi Capps had 13 points and both Hannah McLemore and Kennedy Stracner had 12 points.

The Blue Devils lost just one starter from last year’s team that finished one win away from the Northwest Regional Tournament.

“The girls have a chance to have one of those special years. They could do a lot of good things if they stay healthy and keep their heads on straight,” Cordova coach Randy Stracner said. “We have five seniors, three juniors, and even the 10th graders playing now are experienced. We have high expectations.”

Cordova led the game 44-2 at the break and 72-5 after three quarters.

The Blue Devils will be in action again at Meek on Friday.
