City joins list of investors in Forward Walker County

Jasper City Council members unanimously approved joining a list of investors in Forward Walker County, an economic recovery plan of the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County.

The vote to join Forward Walker County means the city has pledged $250,000 over a five-year period to the initiative. Jasper joins a number of businesses, county municipalties and the Walker County Commission in becoming investors in the program.

In other business from Tuesday’s council meeting, the council:

•heard from Brent McCarver, who represented a group of members of Jasper’s First Church of the Nazarene who attended Tuesday’s meeting. McCarver said he and the group were there to praise the Jasper Fire Department and Jasper Police Department for their work in a devastating fire at the church on Aug. 9. The church was declared a total loss, but McCarver said Jasper firefighters and police went above and beyond their responsibilities in trying to save the church.

•approved a request from acting Fire Chief David Clark to provide funding to allow the department to buy T-shirts in order to sell them to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness.

T-shirts are on sale now at the Jasper Fire Department for $15 for short sleeve and $20 for long sleeve.

•approved a budget amendment to add funding for the street department, and introduced an amendment to the budget to add $150,000 for various departments in the city.

•adopted a resolution to declare two police vehicles as unneeded. The vehicles were previously given to Bevill State Community College to use for the college’s police department.

•adopted a resolution to support the current United Way Campaign.

•adopted a resolution regarding a maintenance policy for city cemeteries.

•approved nuisance abatement ordinances regarding three properties declared as a nuisance. The council also adopted a resolution to set costs for four properties that fell under the nuisance abatement ordinance.

•approved an ordinance to rezone a .25-acre piece of property at 1201 Alabama Avenue from R-1 (Single Family Residential) to B-T (Transition Business) to allow for development of a professional office.
