Following an up-and-down start to the season, Carbon Hill hit its groove against Lynn, the No. 4 team in Class 1A.
Lynn came into the game with a 13-0 record, but was held to just four hits by Lady Bulldog pitcher Ansley Madison, who allowed one walk and struck out five in the game.
Madison also had a big game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
“I believe you win games with solid pitching, defense and timely hitting. Today that’s what we did,” Carbon Hill coach Wade Tittle said.
“We have so many injuries right now. It’s hard to explain, but our team has kept a great attitude and just played ball. This is a good win, but we understand it’s a long season and there will be highs and lows. We just have to keep playing.”
Meagan Bice was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI for the Lady Bulldogs (5-4). Kelsy Alexander was 1-for-3 with a run, Laray Lollar was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Brittany Chambers was 1-for-3 and both Nikki Alexander and Ashley Tubbs scored a run.
Carbon Hill hosts Haleyville on Thursday. Lynn (13-1) plays at Brilliant on Monday.
Curry 10, Walker 0, five innings
Curry jumped out to a big lead and never looked back, beating Walker 10-0 in five innings in the area opener for both teams on Tuesday.
Eighth-grade pitcher Ashlee Swindle, who pitched four-plus innings of relief against Sumiton Christian on Monday, followed that up with a great outing against the Lady Vikings.
She allowed just three hits and struck out seven batters.
For the Lady Yellow Jackets, ranked No. 6 in Class 5A, Shauna Rowe and Shannan Rowe each went 2-for-3 while both Ella Banks and Ashlee Swindle had a hit.
Curry plays at Cordova in a battle of ranked Walker County teams beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
South Lamar 2, Parrish 1
South Lamar won a battle of top 5 teams in Class 1A on Tuesday, holding off Parrish 2-1 at South Lamar High School.
Parrish held a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning following a Taylor Winchester run.
No. 2 South Lamar battled back with single runs in the third and sixth innings to earn the win.
No. 3 Parrish (7-1) was led by Nina Tucker, who was 2-for-2. Winchester, Grayson Culverson and Paige Dill each added hits.
Culverson took the loss on the mound, allowing three hits and striking out seven.
Parrish hosts a double header vs. Jefferson Christian and Saint Bernard on Thursday.
Vestavia Hills 4, Sumiton Christian 0
Vestavia Hills got some revenge against Sumiton Christian on Tuesday, handing the Lady Eagles a 4-0 home loss. Sumiton Christian, which defeated No. 1-ranked Vestavia Hills in tournament play earlier this year, gave up two runs in the first and sixth innings.
The teams combined for seven hits on the day with Vestavia Hills coming away with four and Sumiton Christian — the No. 2 in Class 2A — getting three. Katie Justice took the loss. She allowed four hits, two walks while striking out two.
At the plate, Cadi Oliver was 1-for-3 with a stolen base and both Clara Bowen and Kendell Hamm were 1-for-2. Sumiton Christian, whose losses are to three 6A schools (Vestavia Hills, Sparkman and Spain Park) and 5A Lawrence County, are now 14-4 on the season.
The Lady Eagles play an area game at Cold Springs beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday.
