Sgt. Darrell Mote, a sheriff’s office investigator, said Joseph Vance Sherer, 50, of 106 Oak Springs Drive in Jasper, was shot twice during an altercation with his next-door neighbor around 2:20 p.m. Sunday.
Sherer was taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham where he was treated and released.
Mote said Sherer went into his neighbor’s yard and initiated an altercation.
“The homeowner defended himself with a weapon,” Mote said. “He fired several shots from a .38 caliber handgun. Two of them struck Mr. Sherer.”
Mote said the investigation is ongoing. He said sheriff’s office officials will consult with the Walker County District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed in connection with the case.
