Addison holds off Ragland; Sumiton Christian falls

Addison took a big step toward winning a region title on Friday, knocking off Ragland 28-20 on the road.

The Bulldogs held a commanding 28-6 lead in the fourth quarter before a late rally gave Ragland a chance to complete the comeback.

Addison finally put the Purple Devils away with a fourth-down stand at the 10-yard line in the closing seconds.

For Addison, Dillon Jarrett had a big game, scoring a pair of touchdowns.

Ragland jumped out to a 6-0 lead early following a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

Jarrett put the Bulldogs (2-0, 1-0) on the scoreboard with 3:26 left in the opening quarter on a 4-yard run. Kyle Denson added the 2-point conversion for an 8-6 Addison lead.

Addison followed with a Jarrett 7-yard run in the second quarter. Denson again added a 2-point conversion for a 16-6 lead at the 7:56 mark.

Devin Marlin scored on a 25-yard run in the third quarter to put Addison on top 22-6. The final touchdown for the Bulldogs came on a Taylor Wilson 8-yard run with 3:12 left in the third quarter as Addison took a 28-6 lead.

Ragland struck back with a pair of touchdowns coming at the 10:24 and 5:52 marks of the fourth quarter.

Addison hosts Southeastern next week.

Appalachian 30, Sumiton Christian 7

After Sumiton Christian’s fast start against Shades Mountain Christian in the season opener, the Eagles ran into trouble against Appalachian on Friday night, losing to the host team 30-7.

The Eagles were a perfect 3-0 all time against Appalachian until Friday night’s contest.

With the win, Appalachian (2-0, 2-0) has already matched last year’s win total.

Caleb Dollar scored Sumiton Christian’s lone touchdown of the night.

Sumiton Christian (1-1, 1-1), which beat Shades Mountain Christian 40-13 last week, hosts Meek in another Class 1A, Region 6 game next week.
