Registration is $25 per player and each player will go to 10 different locations on Smith Lake to collect playing cards in hopes of getting the best five-card hand and the grand prize of $500.
The first Mike Beasley Memorial Poker Run was held on July 28, 2001, following a boating accident that took the life of Duskin Point Marina owner Mike Beasley in May 2001. It was organized to raise money to purchase underwater cameras and equipment that would enable divers and rescue personnel to recover drowning victims at water depths that were previously considered impossible on Smith Lake.
During the search for his son, Beasley’s father, Harold Beasley, and other family members teamed up with the Walker, Winston and Cullman County Sheriff’s Offices and Emergency Management Agencies to establish a special task force. They would use special underwater cameras and other equipment so no other family would have to go through the long agonizing wait the Beasley family endured before Beasley’s body was finally recovered.
Over the year’s the Mike Beasley Memorial Poker Run has raised some $750,000 to help purchase specialized cameras and equipment for the Smith Lake Task Force.
“The task force now has a boat that houses all the underwater equipment they use for searching for drowning victims,” Harold Beasley said. “They also have a truck to tow that boat to any location where it might be needed and everything is stored and maintained in a building purchased by the task force.”
Beasley said there is a plaque mounted on the boat stating, “This vessel and it’s equipment is dedicated to the memory of Mike Beasley.”
“The Mike Beasley Memorial Foundation has also donated money to various volunteer fire and rescue departments surrounding Smith Lake and the local humane society, as well as the Smith Lake Task Force,” Beasley said. “That’s why we have continued to have this event each year, and we invite everyone to come out and join in the fun and help raise money for a great cause.”
Beasley said any type of watercraft is welcome and there will be free launching at Duskin Point Marina for the event.
“We will also have live entertainment provided by Paul Anderson and Jason Speegle from 4 until 7 p.m., and hot dogs will be available on the island for a donation,” Beasley said.
“We are selling T-shirts and tickets for drawings on a 42-inch flat screen TV, a barbecue grill, a shot gun, a wakeboard, a watersport tube, gift cards and more.”
The T-shirts, which feature a cat and dog riding in a boat, are $20 and the raffle tickets are $1. Both are available at Duskin Point Marina.
A drawing for all prizes will be at 4 p.m. the day of the event, and if the winner is not present they will be contacted by phone.
