Free Comic Book Day is an annual promotional effort by the comic book industry to help bring new readers into comic book stores. Quality Collectibles has given away comics for several years on the first Saturday in May. Owner J.R. Lee said the store wanted to up participation for the event this year.
“We have done this for a while, and we’ve had a good number of people, but we wanted to do something bigger this year,” he said.
Quality Collectibles will host two actors Saturday who have played zombies in “The Walking Dead.”
Melissa Cowen played Hannah, also known as “Bicycle Girl.” Cowen’s character was featured in the series’ first episode. She was first zombie encountered by main character Rick Grimes. Cowen has also been an extra in films including “Halloween 2,” “Hall Pass,” “Life as We Know It” and several Tyler Perry films.
Charlie “Chaz” Leach played Professor Woodchuck Walker, also known as “Autopsy Zombie.” Leach’s character was featured in the show’s second season. Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon thought he had ate another character, Sophia, and performed an autopsy on him.
“The zombies on the show are really popular,” Lee said. “These guys are not main characters, but they were in some memorable scenes. ‘Walking Dead’ is so popular right now. We are excited they will be here Saturday.”
Cowen and Leach will be at the store to meet with fans and sign autographs. Lee said autographs are free with the purchase of any “Walking Dead” merchandise.
“We have ‘Walking Dead’ stuff starting out at $2.99,” he added.
Free Comic Book Day will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Quality Collectibles. The event will also include a costume contest. A wide variety of comic books, ranging from “Strawberry Shortcake” to “The Walking Dead,” will be given away Saturday.
Quality Collectibles is located in Jasper’s Parkland Shopping Center near Captain D’s.
