A protest and rally in downtown Jasper on Monday afternoon had its share of tense moments. The combination of people protesting the death of George Floyd, a handful of citizens concerned about the Confederate monument on the courthouse square and a large number of law enforcement officers could have turned ugly quickly, but it did not thanks mostly to the patience and good judgement of local police.

Let's clean out the notebook ... Hill Fest in Carbon Hill has now been cancelled, according to a post put on the festival's Facebook page. No reason was given for the cancellation, and I have not been able to reach one of the organizers, but I imagine it has to be the COVID-19 virus.

I know technically summer isn’t until the middle of June, around my mother’s birthday, but when I stepped outside on my porch the other morning to enjoy my coffee, I felt the sting of humidity and when it feels like summer, I know that the worst of the heat is still to come. more
