Since I was a small child, I’ve been a wrestling fan. I’m not talking about the sport you find in the Olympics. I’m talking about the sports entertainment brand of wrestling where some of the athletes wear colorful masks, participants march to the ring with crazy music playing and often times grown people settle their differences inside a steel cage. I guess it is typically known in our neck of the woods as ‘rasslin’ instead of wrestling. more

The Walker County Republican Party recently decided to reject two local candidates who applied to be on the GOP ballot this year: Mike Cole, who was going to try for sheriff, and Tanya Guin, who is running for county superintendent of education. Cole, who ran four years ago for sheriff as a Democrat, now will likely bow out of that race, although he has protested as to the process being unfair. more
At lunchtime yesterday, I left my office at Bevill State Community College to attend a chamber of commerce lunch meeting. The sky was tombstone grey with light mist falling. Cranking up my truck, I sat for a moment while the engine warmed and the wipers squeaked on the windshield, looking for water to swish. I rolled the driver’s side window down to wipe the mist off my rearview mirror. more

I had a visit from state Rep. Tim Wadsworth, R-Arley, and we conversed on a number of things. It is clear that his number one priority right now is to save the hospital in Winston County, which is set to close in Haleyville. He was rather proud of Winston County officials and residents, as they all seem united to try to do whatever they can to save the hospital. It should be pointed out the hospital isn’t even in his district, but he is quite concerned enough that this appears to be his top issue at the moment. more
