Poe, Tina Aaron, Jacque Allred and JPD Officer Heath Allred look over toys that were collected by Jasper police for this year’s toy drive sponsored by the Youth Advocates Program at the Jasper Family Services Center. Aaron is director of the program. The toys will be given as Christmas gifts to 40 kids served by the program. more

The Walker County Commission will likely hold a major updated review of its finances at its first night meeting on Monday, Jan. 16, with one commissioner saying some departments are “trending over budget.”  Discussion about the timing of that meeting arose at Monday’s commission meeting, as the commission voted to move its Tuesday, Jan. 2, meeting to Thursday, Jan. 4. The meeting day had already been moved from Jan. 1 because of the New Year’s holiday. more

Jasper City Council members agreed Tuesday morning to waive building permit fees to allow for construction of a new Beacon House residential facility. The previous facility was destroyed by fire more than a year ago. more
At least one person was injured Monday afternoon when a late model Ford Bronco slammed into the rear of a school bus on Viking Drive in Jasper. The bus, which is operated by the Walker County School System, showed little damage, and the only person on the bus was its driver. The accident happened just before 4 p.m. more
