CORDOVA — The Cordova City Council passed a resolution Tuesday that spelled out several events and worthwhile organizations now deemed as "causes that serve a valuable public purpose."


A display of military uniforms dating back to World War I provided a dramatic backdrop for a visit by Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Anthony "Tony" Grinston at Cordova High School's Veterans Day program on Tuesday. The uniforms, many of which were donated by local vets, are part of the personal collection of Coach Tyler Kuykendall and his father, Charlie, and are on display as teaching tools in his classroom.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 833 in Jasper recently donated $4,000 to the Beacon House. The donation, given from among the 371 members of the union, will be used for purchasing Christmas gifts for the girls at Beacon House. Union leaders indicated the members, who service Alabama Power facilities, want to be more involved in the community. Walker Baptist Medical Center on Thursday announced it earned an "A" for the fall 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction, which represents the hospital’s third consecutive "A," and recognizes the hospital’s achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care.


Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Anthony "Tony" Grinston, a 1986 Walker High School graduate, received a hero's welcome over the weekend as Jasper turned out for receptions and the annual Veterans Day Parade to honor that native.
