Alabama’s annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday will occur earlier this year than in previous years, with Walker County and several municipalities participating. The sales tax holiday weekend will begin at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 21, and run through midnight on Sunday, July 23. In previous years, the school sales tax holiday for Alabama was scheduled for the first week in August. more
Constables in Walker County say progress has been made in recent years to take them serously as law enforcement, noting that they are also used as backup by other agencies in everything from crime scenes to festivals. Officers in the Walker County Constables Association, which was formed in 2013, said attitudes about constables are changing, and their association is becoming a clearing house for requests to assist at scheduled events. more
United Way of Central Alabama has announced Bert Hendrix as the 2017 Walker County campaign chair for the annual United Way fundraising campaign. Hendrix currently serves as the president of the First Bank of Jasper, a local division of Synovus Bank. He has a long history with United Way, participating in workplace campaigns during his 20 years at the First Bank of Jasper and a local bank in Opelika for 10 years prior to that. more
Monday, July 31, is the last day to register to vote in the Aug. 15 Senate primary and countywide tax referendum, according to the Secretary of State John Merrill’s website. The last day to make an application for a regular absentee ballot for the primary election is Thursday, Aug. 10, five days before the balloting takes place, according to an administrative election calendar on the website. more
