Walker High School students and members of the Jasper City Schools system joined on Monday to remember the life of Tommy Hobson. Hobson served as assistant principal at the high school and was killed over spring break, March 22, in an automobile accident in Arkansas. more
Hail the size of quarters fell in Curry Monday afternoon as a strong thunderstorm moved through the county. The line of severe thunderstorms passed mostly through the northern part of Walker County. Forecasts call for more severe thunderstorms in Alabama later this week. more

The next time you hear a tornado siren go off, you can be pretty sure that Bobby Jackson has had a hand in it — literally. Jackson has the job of maintaining the county’s 45 outdoor warning sirens, including 14 in the city of Jasper and one in Cordova. Those 15 are managed by the cities’ police departments and tested monthly, except in inclement weather, when the test is postponed until the next day. Setting one off during a storm might lead residents to think it’s an actual alert rather than a test. more
GOODSPRINGS — Dollar General is now serving customers in the community of Goodsprings. The new store opened at 11254 Highway 269 on Monday and will serve residents in the community of Goodsprings who haven’t had a business to purchase groceries at in a number of years. more
The Walker County Commission’s proposal to take the general sales tax from 2 cents to 3 cents will put it closer to the average for counties its size — although about two-thirds of the state have a general tax at 2 cents or less. The Daily Mountain Eagle looked at county sales tax information from the state Department of Revenue to see how the county’s proposal fares with other counties. more
The bill that would set up the referendum for a 1-cent county sales tax has been advertised weekly in the Daily Mountain Eagle and will run one more time on March 31, which will clear the way for its introduction in the Alabama Legislature. more
