CARBON HILL - The Carbon Hill City Council voted 4-1 with one abstention on Monday to approve a new police policy and procedure manual. District 5 Councilwoman Suzanne Atkins voted against the policy, while District 3 Councilwoman April Herron abstained. more
Ridez for a Reason wil sponsor a car show to benefit the Homeless Veterans Initiative of Alabama on April 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. Josh Colburn of Ridez for a Reason said no entry fee will be charged, but donations will be requested to benefit the Jasper-based non-profit, which was formally established in recent months to assist homeless veterans. more
The Twenty/20 student ministry at Eldridge Baptist Church is hosting an outdoor youth event Sunday to benefit the Eldridge Free Will Baptist Children’s Home. “Call By Name” will feature James Cato, a youth pastor and area director of First Priority, as well as Christian hip-hop artist Short-Tee and DJ Mpack. Worship will be led by Ty Beahm of Florence. more
Even though the proposed 1-cent sales tax increase for Walker County would raise rates in local municipalities as well, many of the mayors of the major municipalities appeared sympathetic for the Walker County Commission to raise revenue to keep up with inflation and indicated it would not severely hurt their cities. more
Jasper Mayor David O’Mary, streets superintendent Russ Smallwood, city employee Billy Wade and city council member Willie Moore look on as the city’s newest equipment — a compact track loader — is put to work at the Gay Reed Cemetery. The city just purchased the track loader from Farley Tractor in Jasper this week to help upgrade the streets department’s fleet of equipment. more
Lavish Coffee Bar in downtown Jasper is now selling a variety of flavors of Suzy’s Pops, gourmet ice pops. Suzy’s Pops was founded in 2011 in Huntsville. The ice pops come in a variety of flavors and sell for $4 each. more
The Jasper Herb Society’s Eighth Annual Herb Day fundraiser will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the 4 Seasons Garden Center in Jasper. The event will feature gardening demonstrations, door prizes and refreshments, as well as advice on growing fresh herbs from club members. more
CARBON HILL - Carbon Hill will hold its annual Clean Up Day on Saturday, starting at 8 a.m., City Clerk Nanette Brown said Monday. “We’ll probably try to knock off by 2 o’clock,” Mayor Mark Chambers said later that day. more
The Jasper City Board of Education approved the academic calendar for school year 2017-18 at Monday night’s board meeting. Superintendent Dr. Ann Jackson and Curriculum Specialist Jana Jackson said next year’s calendar and the current academic calendar have minor differences. more
