OAKMAN— Oakman High School is making history twofold.

Carbon Hill High School librarian Tina McGee has spent the past week working on a large mural at the school. Once completed, the mural will resemble the Patagonia logo, with a Carbon Hill twist. As she painted after school on Friday, McGee explained the hills she has designed on the wall mirror a panoramic picture she took of hills behind the school's football field. The librarian has painted other murals around the school as well.

In the spirit of Halloween, Jasper Jr. High School students completed a graveyard project. Students used STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) concepts to create tombstones that recognize important people in history.

Sumiton Elementary School let students trick or treat at the school early Thursday morning to celebrate Halloween. Children had the opportunity to wear their favorite costumes and receive candy from staff members.

New library boxes in the communities of Oakman and Carbon Hill are encouraging adults and children to read. A partnership between the Walker County Arts Alliance, the Walker County Board of Education and Alabama Public Television's IQ Learning Network made the project a reality, and the Daily Mountain Eagle provided old newspaper boxes to house books in the boxes. Students at Oakman and Carbon Hill elementary schools spent the last several months cleaning the boxes and painting them, and they were recently placed in the school's respective communities. Each little library is stocked with books for community members to take a book, for free, and leave a book for another reader to enjoy.

Carbon Hill Elementary School is celebrating Red Ribbon Week with dress-up days. Tuesday's theme was "Yee-Haw, Give Drugs the Boot," and students wore hillbilly-themed attire. One group of students also created a red ribbon design on Tuesday by using red plastic cups. Red Ribbon Week serves to discourage drug use and promotes healthy behaviors.  more
