To celebrate the Christmas season, Thursday was Polar Express Day at Memorial Park Elementary School. Students got to wear their pajamas to school and took turns riding a train that was driven by their principal, Eric Rigsby. Other schools in Walker County have Polar Express days as well. Jasper High School teacher Mike Cordle's AP U.S. History class performed a play on Wednesday to commemorate Alabama's bicentennial. Sen. Greg Reed, R-Jasper, and Jasper Mayor David O'Mary attended the performance.

Ahead of the Christmas holiday, kindergarten students at T.R. Simmons Elementary School decorated gingerbread houses on Thursday with the help of their parents and teachers. Kindergartners also made candy Christmas trees. Decorating gingerbread houses in an annual tradition for kindergarten students to enjoy at the school.

Jasper Jr. High School now has the distinction of being the only school in Jasper City Schools that is STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) certified. more

Bankhead Middle School is now one of only two STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) certified schools in Walker County and the first to receive the distinction in Walker County Schools.

Lupton Jr. High School Resource Officer Josh Harkness, at far right, taught the school's seventh-graders about civil and criminal law last week. He also discussed the juvenile justice system. Harkness has led many law-related discussions with students since he became Lupton's SRO last school year.
