Ralph Mullinax, 80, of Oakman, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2020, at home. Family will receive friends Friday, August 21, 2020, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Service will follow at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home. Burial will be at Day Cemetery. George Barrera will officiate.

Mr. Mullinax worked for 40 years in the coal industry, retiring from the Drummond Coal Company. He served as a Director on the Walker County ALFA board. He served in leadership roles as an elder at Woodland Trace Chruch of Christ and deacon at Oakman Church of Christ. He enjoyed all things outdoors, working on his farm, hunting, fishing, and introducing his grandchildren to those things. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Bessie Mullinax; siblings, Jerry Mullinax, Martie Wade, and LaRue Norris; in laws, Lee and Annie Laurie Parsons.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Mullinax; daughters, Lisa Thrash (Al) and Melanie Moore (Wayne); brother, Richard Mullinax (Mary); grandchildren, Lauren Young (Dayne), Lee Moore, Will Thrash and Luke Moore; great grandchildren, Layla Jane Young and Carter Elyse Young.

Honorary Pallbearers are George Barrera, Ken Watson, Casey Vague, Phil Griffin, Tommy Ayers, James Davidson, Robert Cheatwood, Ted Evans, Mickey Drummond, Nick Bass, Bill Clark, and Ronnie Burton.

Pallbearers are Lee Moore, Will Thrash, Luke Moore, Mark Norris, Ronnie Blackwell, Ricky Blackwell, Chance Mullinax, and Randy Mullinax.

Gifts may be made in Memory of Ralph Mullinax to the Woodland Trace Benevolence fund.

Lessie Louise Kilgo was born in a small home near the convict camp in Sumiton on Aug. 8, 1926. Kilgo is now 94 years old, spending the twilight time of her life in her daughter’s home in Cullman County. more

• The candidates have completed their qualifying - sort of. A new law says candidates now have up to five days after filing their qualifying papers to file their statement of economic interests with the State Ethics Commission. (They used to do it the day they filed.) If a candidate fails to file a statement of economic interest, the law provides that their name shall not appear on the ballot. And the fourth and fifth days fall on a Saturday and Sunday, so the last-minute people should get to hopping.


SUMITON – Members of the Sumiton City Council agreed Tuesday for the city to participate in the Walker County Transportation System, an operation that would be organized by the Walker County Community Action Agency.

(Editor's note: Rick Watson, who wrote this weekly column and served as a reporter and photographer on our staff, died suddenly early Thursday morning. That night we discovered Rick had written a final column, and had printed it out for his wife, Jilda, to look at before he emailed it to us. She has graciously passed it along to us, so that we may all have a final amusement from our friend and co-worker. )
